THE LOBBY
Overview
An evocative space paved with fumed oak floors, with Vermont Cold Spring Black Granite and lacquered panels at the walls. The space is furnished with an eclectic mix of custom and antique furniture with "Seabed," a ceramic installation by Peter Lane and bronze door pulls by Michele Oka Doner.
Lobby Artwork By George Condo
George Condo is one of the most influential American artists living today. Born in New Hampshire in 1957, Condo has occupied a prominent position in the art world for close to three decades. Ranging from painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture, his work is informed by the inherited European tradition of art making.
Door Pulls by Michelle Oka Doner
Michele Oka Doner is one of today's foremost artist-designers, whose prodigious career spans four decades. The breadth of her artistic production encompasses sculpture, furniture, jewelry, public art, and functional objects. All of Oka Doner's work is fueled by her lifelong study and appreciation of the natural world, from which she derives her formal vocabulary.
She is well known for her numerous pubic art installations, including "A Walk on the Beach," at The Miami International Airport (1995-2008) which features nearly a mile of dark terrazzo inlaid with bronze and mother of pearl. Recent work includes collections with Christofle and Steuben Glass as well as public art projects at Rutgers University, the Ocean County Library, both in New Jersey, and the University of South Florida in Sarasota.
Her sculpture and functional objects have been acquired by several prestigious museums, among them The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée dés Arts Dècoratifs at the Louvrè, the Virginia Museum of fine Arts, and the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
Among her many publications are two monographs: Natural Seduction published by Hudson Hills Press (2003) examines the broad scope of Oka Doner's work; and Workbook published by Oka Press (2004), which focuses on blueprints of thousands of cast bronzes for her public projects.
Ceramic Installation by Peter Lane
Peter Lane is a ceramic artist based in New York City. From a career as a painter in the early 90's, he made the transition to pottery after taking a class with some friends on a lark. "We used to be able to buy all those great mid-century pots at flea markets for fifty cents, then they suddenly became fifty dollars. I thought, how hard could it be to make them myself?"
"I immediately fell in love with the whole process, the clay, the glazing, the firing. The surfaces had a depth and richness I had been trying to get in my paintings. It didn't take long before I was calling myself a potter."
Success was not far behind for Mr. Lane. "I hadn't been doing it for very long when I won the Tokyo/New York Sister Cities prize, which was a trip to Japan. On my first trip there I was offered an exhibition in a prestigious gallery. So many things just fell into place for me so quickly. I guess my passion for ceramics was contagious."
"Being in New York made all the difference. Most potters have to move to Montana or North Carolina, but my friendship with Bill Georgis and other top designers led to a stream of commissions that has kept me very busy. I am so happy working collaboratively with all the great talent in this town. It's so satisfying to see my work, lamps, centerpieces, vases, and tiles, integrated into these elegant interiors and people's daily lives."
"For the 350 West Broadway project I immediately thought of all the great schemes from the twentieth century, by Louise Nevelson and Erwin Hauer, and work by some of my favorite artists like Louise Bourgois and Axel Salto. I imagined plant-like construction, like vertebrae, fleurs-de-lys, a giant necklace. It would be both a pedestal object and a permanent potted palm for the lobby."
"This work is the culmination of everything I've worked toward so far. All my ceramic skills and knowledge have gone into it, plus my desire to make a larger statement with my art. I am very grateful for the opportunity to participate in a project that is so very sophisticated and so attuned to my own sensibilities."
In September 2008 Mr. Lane will open a one-person exhibition at Gallery Chahan in Paris. "This is such a great opportunity for me. My work blends so beautifully with their mid-century American aesthetic." More information about Peter Lane, and examples of his work, can be found at his website www.peterlaneclay.com.
